Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County (北川羌族自治县) in Sichuan was the area hardest hit by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (汶川大地震), which killed over 20,000 people in the county alone. The old town was buried by landslides and preserved as a memorial; a completely new Beichuan was rebuilt on a safer site about 20 km away.
