Beihai was one of the starting points of the ancient Maritime Silk Road during the Han dynasty — the Hepu 合浦 (Hépǔ) port within today's Beihai shipped pearls and goods to Southeast Asia and India over 2,000 years ago.

Famous for 银滩 Yíntān (Silver Beach), known for fine white sand, and for being one of China's earliest 14 coastal cities opened up to foreign investment in 1984.
