Tips

history
From 《汉书·魏相传》: Emperor Xuan of Han, starting to handle state affairs personally, 励精为治, sharpened his spirit for governance. Later crystallized as 励精图治 in 《宋史·神宗纪赞》.
usage
Formal, laudatory. Traditionally used for rulers and officials; now extended to leaders who push ambitious reforms. Rarely used for private individuals.
