The eight nations were Britain, France, Germany, Russia, the United States, Japan, Italy, and Austria-Hungary. They intervened in 1900 to suppress the Boxer Rebellion (义和团运动) and lift the siege of foreign legations in Beijing. The war ended with the Boxer Protocol (辛丑条约) in 1901, imposing a 450 million tael indemnity on China.
