In 1898 Guangxu backed Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao in the 戊戌变法 (Hundred Days' Reform). Empress Dowager Cixi staged a coup after 103 days, executed six reformers, and put the emperor under house arrest at 瀛台 until his death in 1908, one day before Cixi’s own.

Modern forensic tests on his hair in 2008 confirmed lethal levels of arsenic, backing the long-standing suspicion that he was poisoned. The episode remains a staple of late-Qing TV dramas and a symbol of reform stifled by palace politics.
