Don't confuse this with Guangzhou (广州) in southern China: same characters in Korean Hanja (光州) but a different city. South Korea has six 广域市 ('metropolitan cities'): Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Gwangju, Daejeon, and Ulsan.

Gwangju is best known internationally for the May 1980 民主化运动 (democratization movement), brutally suppressed by the Chun Doo-hwan government and now commemorated as a foundational moment of modern Korean democracy.
