Named after
元谋县 Yuanmou County, Yunnan, where two incisors and stone tools were unearthed in 1965. Dated to ~1.7 million years ago (Lower Pleistocene), making them among the earliest Homo erectus remains in East Asia. Covered in every Chinese middle-school history textbook as the start of China's human story.
