作秀 is a calque combining the verb
作 ('to do, perform') with
秀, a phonetic loan of English 'show' (also seen in
脱口秀 talk show,
真人秀 reality show). It entered Mandarin from Hong Kong/Taiwan media in the 1990s and almost always carries a negative tone — performing for an audience rather than acting sincerely.
