Fragment of a signature line from 《孟子·梁惠王上》 (Mencius, Book 1A): 老吾老，以及人之老；幼吾幼，以及人之幼 - 'honor my elders and extend that to the elders of others; cherish my young and extend that to the young of others.' The classical Confucian formulation of extending family-style benevolence to all.
usage
Rarely quoted on its own - usually read as the tail of the second couplet 幼吾幼以及人之幼, or as part of the longer paired formulation with 老吾老以及人之老. The full saying means 'to care for others' children as one's own.'
