usage

亚 marks the 'lower' oxidation state of an acid, so 亚硝酸 = nitrous acid (HNO2) while 硝酸 = nitric acid (HNO3). 亚硝酸钠 is therefore NaNO2, not NaNO3 (which is 硝酸钠).
