history
'Five Dynasties' refers to five short-lived regimes that ruled the north in succession (Later Liang, Tang, Jin, Han, Zhou) — none lasting more than 17 years. 'Ten Kingdoms' are the concurrent regional states, mostly in the south. Ended when Zhao Kuangyin founded the Song in 960 and mopped up the rest by 979.
