临帖 is the standard apprenticeship method in Chinese calligraphy. Students copy classic (zìtiè, model books) such as 王羲之 (Wáng Xīzhī)'s (Lántíng Xù) or 颜真卿 (Yán Zhēnqīng)'s works to absorb structure and stroke style.
usage
Note here is read tiè (4th tone), referring to a model copy book. The same character is read tiē (1st tone) in (obedient) and tiě (3rd tone) in 请帖 (invitation card).
