临帖 is the standard apprenticeship method in Chinese calligraphy. Students copy classic 字帖 (zìtiè, model books) such as 王羲之's 兰亭序 or 颜真卿's works to absorb structure and stroke style.
usage
Note 帖 here is read tiè (4th tone), referring to a model copy book. The same character is read tiē (1st tone) in 服帖 (obedient) and tiě (3rd tone) in 请帖 (invitation card).
