临川, in Jiangxi, was Tang Xianzu's hometown. In each of the four plays a dream turns the story: 《牡丹亭》 (also called 《还魂记》), 《紫钗记》, 《南柯记》 and 《邯郸记》. They are also named after his studio, 玉茗堂四梦.
