The Toyotomi (
丰臣 /
豊臣) name was bestowed by Emperor Ōgimachi on the peasant-born general Hashiba Hideyoshi (
羽柴秀吉) in 1586, elevating him to imperial-court rank. Hideyoshi (
丰臣秀吉, 1537–1598) is one of the 'Three Unifiers' of Japan alongside Oda Nobunaga (
织田信长) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (
德川家康). He launched the disastrous Imjin War invasions of Korea (
壬辰倭乱) in 1592 and 1597.
