Three silk (now nylon) strings stretched over a wooden soundbox covered with snakeskin and a long, fretless neck. Core to northern narrative-singing traditions (京韵大鼓, 单弦) and to Jiangnan silk-and-bamboo music. The Japanese shamisen (三味线) descends directly from the sanxian via Ryukyu in the 16th century.
