一片 has three layers: flat thin objects (slice of bread, petal, leaf), expanses of land or water (一片森林 a forest, 一片大海), and atmospheric states (一片混乱 total chaos, 一片寂静 complete silence, 一片好意 entirely good intentions). The abstract use is extremely common.
