The Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow is an Eastern Han bronze.
Tips
culture
Unearthed from a Han tomb at 雷台 in 武威, Gansu. The horse gallops with one hoof resting on a bird in flight, which shows it running faster than the bird. Since 1983 it has been the emblem of Chinese tourism.
usage
Its museum name is 铜奔马 'bronze galloping horse'. The bird has also been read as a falcon or as the mythical 龙雀, so the piece goes by other names too, such as 马超龙雀.
