British diplomat who led the first British embassy to China, received by the Qianlong Emperor in 1793. He would not perform the full kowtow, 三跪九叩, and the emperor turned down every British request.

Qianlong's reply to George III is remembered for the line 天朝物产丰盈，无所不有, 'the Celestial Empire has all things in abundance', meaning it had no need of British goods. English 'kowtow' is borrowed from 叩头, 'knock the head on the ground'.
