His mission failed when he refused to perform the (sān guì jiǔ kòu, three kneelings and nine kowtows) before Qianlong. The exchange — and Qianlong's letter declaring China had no need of British goods — is a touchstone for early Sino-British relations and the lead-up to the Opium Wars.
