culture
The poem reads 黑夜给了我黑色的眼睛,我却用它寻找光明, 'the black night gave me black eyes, yet I use them to look for light'. Written in 1979, it spoke for the young people who grew up in the Cultural Revolution. His childlike images earned him the name 童话诗人, 'the fairy-tale poet'.
history
In 1993, on Waiheke Island in New Zealand, where he had settled, he attacked his wife 谢烨 with an axe, killing her, and then hanged himself. Those deaths still shadow how his poems are read.
