BRIC was coined by Goldman Sachs's Jim O'Neill in 2001; South Africa joined in 2010 (BRICS). Chinese rendered it 金砖 (gold brick) as a phonetic-semantic pun on BRIC(K). The 2024 expansion added Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE.
