In 1668 a great earthquake struck Tancheng.
Tips
history
Tan was a small state of the Spring and Autumn period. Its ruler 郯子 is said to have taught Confucius, and 韩愈's essay 师说 names him among the sage's teachers. The 1668 earthquake here was the strongest ever recorded in eastern China.
memory
郯 is 炎 with the "city" radical on its right. The same sound part gives tán in 谈 "to talk" and 痰 "phlegm".
