Founded 1872 in Tokyo by Fukuhara Arinobu, originally as a Western-style pharmacy. The name 資生堂 comes from the I Ching phrase 至哉坤元,萬物資生 — 'all things resource their life from the earth.' Became a global cosmetics brand by the mid-20th century.
