history
Demotion-and-exile was a standard imperial penalty: an official lost rank and was sent to a remote prefecture (Lingnan, Hainan, Yelang). Many of China's greatest works - Su Shi's Red Cliff odes, Liu Zongyuan's Yongzhou essays, Han Yu's Chaozhou pieces - were composed in banishment.
