Named for the land south of the
五岭 (Five Ranges) that separate Guangdong/Guangxi from central China. The Qin dynasty first pushed military colonies across these ranges in 214 BCE, but the region kept its own identity — today associated with
粤菜 (Cantonese cuisine),
岭南画派 (Lingnan painting school), and Cantonese opera (
粤剧).
