The name traces to He Zhizhang (
贺知章), who on first meeting Li Bai called him a
谪仙人 (zhéxiānrén) — 'an immortal banished from heaven.' His soaring, free-flowing style earned him the title
诗仙. Pair with
诗圣 (shīshèng, 'Poet-Sage' = Du Fu) and
诗鬼 (shīguǐ, 'Poet-Ghost' = Li He).
