history
The name is Dai, not Chinese: 西双 is "twelve" and 版纳 a district of a thousand rice fields, so the whole means "twelve thousand rice fields". The prefecture in full is 西双版纳傣族自治州.
culture
It is China's main stretch of tropical rainforest and home to most of its wild Asian elephants. The herd that wandered north to the outskirts of Kunming in 2021 set out from here.
