Tips
history
From Duan Chengshi's 《酉阳杂俎续集》 (Tang): a strange creature, once sheathed, 'ran off with blood pouring like a spout'. The 注 literally means 'to pour' - as from a spouted vessel.
register
Vivid and graphic. Common in fiction, news reports of accidents, and martial/wuxia writing. Medical contexts prefer plainer 大量出血.
