Tips

history
In the mid-Tang the court set up 节度使, military governors, on the frontiers. After the An Lushan Rebellion (755–763) these 藩镇 kept their own armies, taxes and successors, a state known as 藩镇割据, which weakened the dynasty until its fall in 907. 藩 'fence, screen' recalls their first role as buffers guarding the empire.
