In Yunnan cuisine, 野生菌类 (wild fungi) — 鸡枞、松茸、牛肝菌 — are a celebrated summer delicacy. Every year hospital wires fill up with cases of mistaken-identity poisoning, so locals always cook them thoroughly with garlic.

菌 alone can mean either "bacterium" or "mushroom" depending on context; 菌类 narrows it to the fungal kingdom (visible mushrooms, molds, yeasts). For bacteria specifically, use 细菌.
