折 here is zhé ("to fold"), not shé ("to snap/break"). Also: the fold is caused by an autosomal-dominant cartilage mutation (osteochondrodysplasia) that also causes painful joint disease. Many veterinary bodies and breeders' associations now discourage breeding the folded variant for welfare reasons — worth mentioning in any cultural context.
