花旗 literally 'flowery flag' — a 19th-century Cantonese nickname for the Stars and Stripes, later extended to 'America' itself (
花旗参 = American ginseng). When Citibank entered China it adopted the old nickname as its official Chinese name, bringing the term back into finance news.
