history
舁 means to carry something jointly and is not used independently in modern Chinese, which uses 抬. Its picture of two pairs of hands is the source of the 'lifting hands' element in characters like 兴's traditional form, 举 (to lift) and 与.
register
Classical and dialectal. 舁 survives in old texts and a few regional uses, not in standard modern speech.
The top reads as a pair of cupped hands (filed under the 臼 'mortar' radical, its indexing radical); together with the hands below it pictures four hands hoisting a load.
