history
In a story in the 韩非子, 杨布 goes out in white, changes into a 缁衣 when it rains, and comes home to find his own dog barking at him. His brother 杨朱 says the dog is not to blame: you would be puzzled too if your white dog came back black.
usage
Later it came to mean the dark robes of Buddhist monks and nuns, and by extension the monks themselves.
