history
Founded 1942 in Yan'an. Today the UFWD oversees CCP relations with the eight 'democratic parties', religious associations, ethnic minorities, Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau affairs, and overseas Chinese. Often called the Party's external influence arm — its activities abroad have drawn intense scrutiny from Western governments since the late 2010s.
usage
Universally shortened to 统战部 (Tǒngzhànbù) in everyday Chinese — full form appears mostly in formal documents and headlines. The verb 统战 (tǒngzhàn) is itself used metaphorically online for 'win over / co-opt' someone's loyalty.
