Almost always read luò (网络 network, 联络 to contact, 经络 TCM channels). A separate colloquial reading lào appears only in a few spoken words like 络子 (a knotted-cord net) and 络丝 (to reel silk); learners can treat luò as the working reading.
The left-side silk radical (a contracted form of 糸) marks 络 as something woven from threads. It places the character with 网, 纺 and 织 - a family of fibre, mesh and textile chars where threads connect to form networks.
Provides the sound, drifting from gè to luò along a regular phonetic series shared with 落, 洛 and 骆. The everyday meaning each plays no role here - 各 is recruited purely for its rhyme.
