usage

Two big modern usages: regulatory bans (banned substances, banned imports) and software ('disable' a feature/account). Antonym in software UI: 启用 (qǐyòng) 'enable'. There's a homograph 禁 (jīn) 'to withstand' giving 禁用 [jīnyòng] 'durable / withstands heavy use', but the [jìn] reading is overwhelmingly more common.
