The house was shabby and falling apart - there were barely any intact panes in the windows.

HSK 7-9

他穿着一件破设设的旧棉袄。

Tā chuānzhe yī jiàn pòshèshè de jiù mián'ǎo.

He was wearing a tattered, ragged old cotton-padded jacket.

Strongly old-fashioned and literary - common in classical vernacular fiction (e.g. 《水浒传》). Modern speech prefers 破破烂烂 for the same image.
