研磨 covers both kitchen-scale grinding (coffee, herbs, ink sticks) and industrial finishing (precision grinding of metal/optics). For coarser crushing use 碾, for pulverizing use 粉碎. For pharmaceutical/chemical lab grinding 研磨 is the standard term.
