China's four great Buddhist grotto complexes are 敦煌莫高窟 (Mogao/Dunhuang), 云冈石窟 (Yungang), 龙门石窟 (Longmen), and 麦积山石窟 (Maijishan). Carved from the 4th–14th centuries, they preserve sculpture, murals, and manuscripts from the Silk Road era.
