瑞尔 (riel) has been Cambodia's official currency since 1980, but in practice the US dollar circulates freely alongside it — small change in shops is given in riels, larger amounts often in USD. The name is unrelated to the German 'reichsthaler'; it likely comes from a local fish (real).
