Bacterial shape names are transparent in Chinese:
球菌 = sphere-bacteria (cocci),
杆菌 (gǎnjūn) = rod-bacteria (bacilli),
螺旋菌 (luóxuánjūn) = spiral-bacteria. Once you know
菌 (jūn, 'bacterium / fungus'), the genus prefixes
葡萄 (grape → staphylo-),
链 (chain → strepto-) read like the Greek roots they translate.
