culture
The 夜光杯 of the opening line are real: jade cups still carved in 酒泉, Gansu, now from Qilian Mountain jade. The name may come from how a cup of wine glows in moonlight, and the craft became national intangible heritage in 2006.
history
凉州, today's Wuwei in Gansu, gave its name to a tune, and many poets wrote a 凉州词 to it; the other famous one is by 王之涣. Wang Han himself loved horses, music and wine, and his career ended in demotions to minor posts far from the capital.
