Read língzhǎng: 长 is 'chief', so humans are the chief of all things, 万物的灵长. The other reading, língcháng 'long-lasting', is classical only. Biology uses the same reading: 灵长类 'primates', 灵长目 'the order Primates'.
culture
Zhu Shenghao's classic translation of 《哈姆雷特》 turned Hamlet's 'the paragon of animals' into 万物的灵长, the phrase most Chinese readers know.
