A traditional household heating implement — a metal or clay pan filled with charcoal, common in rural northern Chinese homes before central heating. Also features in funerary tradition: in some regions, mourners step over a
火盆 when leaving the funeral to ward off bad luck. The Japanese hibachi (
火鉢) uses the same characters with reversed character order.
