Tips

history
In the Wei and Jin dynasties (220–420), 名士 met to debate Laozi, Zhuangzi and the 周易, the school known as 玄学, often holding a 麈尾 whisk as they spoke. Later writers blamed the fashion for the fall of the Western Jin, coining 清谈误国, "pure talk ruins the country", which gave the word its second, critical sense.
