An old transliteration of 'tobacco' (Spanish tabaco), used during the late Ming and Qing dynasties when the plant first reached China via the Philippines. Replaced in modern usage by 烟草 (yāncǎo, 'smoke-grass') and 烟叶 (yānyè, 'smoke-leaf'). You'll only meet 淡巴菰 in historical texts.
