Literally 'east of the Pu (River)' — the area east of the Huangpu River. Designated a special economic zone as
浦东新区 (Pudong New Area) in 1993; grew in three decades from farmland into a forest of skyscrapers in Lujiazui (
陆家嘴), including the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao, SWFC, and Shanghai Tower. Contrast with
浦西 (Puxi), the older historical side of the city.
