The teddy bear is named after US President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, who in 1902 refused to shoot a bear tied up for him on a hunting trip. A toy maker then sold a stuffed bear under his nickname.

On its own, 泰迪 usually means the toy poodle, 泰迪犬, one of the most popular pet dogs in China. For the toy, say 泰迪熊.
