汉剧 is a crucial ancestor of 京剧: when Hubei 汉调 troupes joined the Anhui 徽班 in Beijing during the early 19th century, the resulting fusion of 西皮 (from 汉剧) and 二黄 (from 徽戏) became the 皮黄 foundation of Peking opera.
