Formed around 1917 from the merger of three older Fuzhou styles - 平讲戏，儒林戏 and 唠唠戏 - and originally called 福州戏. It is sung in the Fuzhou dialect of Min Chinese, which makes it largely mutually unintelligible with other regional operas.
